W3 professorship in the field of Structural Analysis and Dynamics
About us
Technische Universität Berlin has approximately 35,000 students, 350 professors, and 7,000 staff, and is a University of Excellence within the Berlin University Alliance. We very much value the diversity of our members and are committed to equal opportunities. We are a certified family-friendly university.
Your responsibility
The current challenges posed by advancing climate change and the global scarcity of resources call for new carbon-neutral and renewable building materials, innovative construction methods, and more efficient, lighter constructions in the building industry. The uncertainties arising from these challenges must be taken into account when determining and evaluating the stability and service life of structures. Given the trend towards lighter building structures and the growing frequency of extreme natural events, climate change events, and human-induced impacts, structural dynamics is becoming an area of increasing focus. The mission of structural analysis and dynamics as a discipline is therefore to address the requirements associated with the specialized use of civil engineering structures, infrastructure constructions and buildings, to develop suitable methods and models, and, in cooperation with other disciplines, to develop innovative solutions and thus make a contribution to overcoming the consequences of climate change and the scarcity of resources.
The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching and research in the field of Structural Analysis and Dynamics covering the full scope of civil engineering. Teaching in the bachelor's and master's programs focuses on the basic principles of structural mechanics, structural analysis, and structural dynamics, as well as cross-material methodological and modeling skills and in-depth knowledge of numerical simulation methods for structural analysis. Compulsory and compulsory-elective courses are taught in German. Ideally, the successful candidate would also teach in the English-language Civil Systems Engineering master’s program.
The research areas associated with the professorship include:
- Development of numerical and experimental methods for the multi-scale analysis of complex civil engineering structures, including digital and data-driven models and artificial intelligence applied to new building materials and structures as well as existing buildings;
- Development of non-deterministic methods for the consideration of data uncertainty in the structural, reliability, and service life analysis of buildings;
- Development of models and methods for recording dynamic interactions of load-bearing structures with the surrounding media such as wind, water, and subsoil.
The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute both actively and formatively to the development of the institute through coordinated research projects, especially in cooperation with other academic and research groups within the faculty and at TU Berlin, for example to establish a (DFG) research unit or other joint research projects. To this end, the successful candidate will have access to nationally and internationally outstanding large-scale infrastructure in the Peter-Behrens-Hall for experimental research.
Further responsibilities include leading and managing the academic group and its staff; supporting the advancement of junior scholars, women, and diversity; knowledge and technology transfer; initiatives to promote internationalization; gender and diversity competence and sustainability-oriented action; as well as committee work.
Your profile
The candidate must fulfill the hiring requirements pursuant to Section 100 of the Berlin State Higher Education Act. These include a university degree in civil engineering or a related discipline; an aptitude for scientific work (generally demonstrated by the quality of the applicant’s doctorate); additional academic achievements (generally demonstrated by a positively evaluated junior professorship, Habilitation, or other achievements equivalent to a Habilitation); as well as an aptitude for teaching demonstrated by a teaching portfolio. (For further information about the teaching portfolio, please see https://www.tu.berlin/en/go209650/).
In-depth knowledge, skills, and experience in one or more of the above-mentioned research areas are required, as are:
- strong technical and methodological skills in modeling and simulation of structures, as well as in experimental methods;
- experience of interdisciplinary collaboration;
- experience with and willingness to acquire and manage third-party funded projects;
- willingness to actively participate in the faculty’s research areas with regard to the challenges in structural analysis and dynamics described above and TU Berlin’s research areas.
Technische Universität Berlin requires professors to be willing and able to assume responsibility for the management and strategic development of their academic group and staff. In particular, this includes an understanding of the special responsibility of creating gender and diversity-sensitive work and study conditions. The position also requires the willingness and ability to advance junior scholars, women, and social diversity as well as to contribute to academic self-governance. The successful candidate is expected to be willing and able to contribute new ideas for internationalization and sustainability-oriented action in research and teaching, as well as foster the use of digital technologies in the areas of teaching content, teaching formats, and student services. Experience with initiatives in science communication as well as knowledge and technology transfer is desirable.
As a university with an international profile, we require our professors to have excellent English-language skills and very much welcome applications from international candidates. The successful candidate will be expected to have a command of German or be willing to learn the language as quickly as possible; this is necessary to fulfill the requirements of the job posting (minimum C1 in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Applicants must be able to teach in German and English. (See the current Language Policy of the Academic Senate of TU Berlin at https://www.tu.berlin/en/go209656/).
It is not possible to offer the position as two part-time professorships.
How to apply
Technische Universität Berlin is committed to increasing the proportion of women in research and teaching and strongly encourages qualified female researchers to apply. Qualified individuals with disabilities will be favored. TU Berlin values the diversity of its staff and is committed to an equality of opportunity. Applications from people of all nationalities and with a migrant background are welcome. Applications from abroad are explicitly welcome.
