Tasks
The position is advertised as part of the interdisciplinary research project “The Capital’s Shadow: Wealth Concentration in Startup Ecosystems”, which is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. The research project is located at the interface of sociology and entrepreneurship research. From an inequality theory perspective, the involvement of the wealth elite with startup ecosystems is to be examined multidimensionally. The aim is to understand the mechanisms of opportunity hoarding and the associated effects on the startup ecosystem in terms of innovation, social permeability and prosperity. To this end, a comparative ethnography of the startup ecosystems in Paris and Berlin will be conducted. The research results will not only be prepared for an academic audience, but also the dialog with stakeholders of the startup ecosystem and policy makers will be sought through policy briefs and roundtable discussions.
Your tasks:
- Take on research tasks in the project “In the Shadow of Capital” with a focus on investors, associations and service providers in the start-up ecosystem
- Prepare research literature on the topic and deal intensively with theories of inequality.
- Conduct twelve months of participant observation in start-up incubators in Berlin and Paris and keep careful records.
- Present your findings at meetings and conferences and write scientific publications.
- Assist in organizing roundtables and writing policy briefs
- This project offers the opportunity for a doctorate
Requirements
- Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in sociology or social sciences with a standard period of study of at least 8 semesters.
- Experience in empirical social research
- Willingness to conduct empirical field research in Berlin and Paris for one year (six months each).
- Very good knowledge of German
- Very good knowledge of French
- Good knowledge of English
- Confident handling of MS Office

- Strong interest in the sociology of inequality and entrepreneurship
- Ability and willingness to collaborate effectively in interdisciplinary teams
- High social competence
- Networking skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience in the preparation of scientific publications
